Do you feel overwhelmed?
Do you feel overwhelmed by everything on your plate? Ever wish things were just…simpler?
Early in my marriage, I felt overwhelmed all the time. I was in school, and working – and very soon after getting married, raising my first baby!
Work, homework, groceries, diaper changes – it felt like there was never enough time for anything.
But after a few years, I discovered something that would change my life.
It took quite a lot of convincing to get me to try it. The idea of taking more time out of my day for some “me time” – time when I disconnected from all my responsibilities and exercised, or did something physical – sounded crazy.
But after getting to my wit’s end, I tried it – and found that it really worked!
It turns out that it’s not really the tasks on our plate that overwhelm us at all. Instead, it’s all the thinking we do about those tasks. If you’re like me, you probably spend hours anticipating and worrying about what you’re going to do when, how, and whether it will be good enough with everything else you have to do.
I know that’s how I felt – and it often left me on the verge of tears!
But to my surprise, taking an hour a day of “me time” allowed me to clear away that mental noise. Without all the expectations, worries, and judgements around my to-do list, it was just that – a to-do list. And it was shockingly easy to knock out the items, one after another.
My own choice for “me time” is to take a walk for about an hour each day. Getting out of the house, moving around, and seeing new sights that remind me of the wonderful world I am so lucky to be part of is the perfect antidote to all that stress of anticipation.
When I feel the cooling breezes and walk past the shining buildings of my city, I remember the bigger picture. All the options that are open to me, and all the things my children might grow up to do – if I can just finish my homework and get the groceries!
Did you know that neuroscientists say we think better when we’re moving around It’s true! No wonder my little ones run around so much.
So let’s take a page out of their books, and get out from in front of our desks and off our couches for an hour of “me time” once a day!
